J-class Yacht Rainbow

Jan Kraak, from Den Helder, in the Netherlands, built this wonderful example of Rainbow, using a set of our frames at 1/20 scale. The AMYA J-Class models are in 1/16 scale but we thought Jan’s model could be a good inspiration for what is possible with these large models.

This page is divided into sections that represent the basic phases of constructing one of these great models.

Please note we sell the 1/16 scale frame set in the button below. If you want a smaller set, please contact us through the Contact Us page.

1 - Assembling the Frame Set

The first job is to install the T-rail on a sturdy and very flat surface. The T-rail needs to be carefully aligned before parts are inserted. I recommend installing everything loosely first in order to get an idea of what parts will be a little tight or tricky to install and which parts will be fit more easily and require less fiddling.

Once you have an idea of how things will work, you can install the T-rail carefully on your building surface. Having installed everything loosely once, you will be more confident that everything should fit together nicely.

Early in the assembly and planking of one of these models, a modeller should already be thinking of things like ballast, rudder and sail controls, deck openings and rigging supports.

2 - Planking and Hull Preparation

Note the preparation of the opening for the motor. This boat is a sailboat, but she is also powered.

3 - Controls

4 - Mast and Standing Rigging

5 - Water Testing

Once all the gear and the mast are installed on the boat, it is a good idea to do some water testing. At this point, there is still the opportunity to move things around inside the hull to adjust the way the boat sits in the water.

5 - Installation of the Deck

Modeller’s Workshop supplies additional parts for a number of the frame sets we well as a secondary module. We feel there is no sense in selling all the parts at one time, as it may take a builder several months to get to that stage of construction.

For example, a deck template and planking can be bought separately.

7 -Deck Houses

Laser-cut deck structure are also available for a number of our frame sets.

8 - Brass and Metal Parts

In this case, the builder, Jan Kraak, milled and fabricated all his own detailing parts.

Here, at Modeller’s Workshop, we design and fabricate 3D-printed parts for many of our models. As with other modules, the 3D-printed parts are sold as a separate item and can be purchased when a client is ready to add those details.

9 - Final Assembly
