Description

The Fifie, originating from the east coast of Scotland, is a sailing fishing boat that has marked the maritime history of the region.

Used by Scottish fishermen from the 1850s until the 20th century, the Fifie contributed to the prosperity of local coastal communities, mainly engaging in herring fishing with trawl nets.

These vessels, also known as “Herring Drifters,” represent the skill and determination of Scottish fishermen in facing the rough waters of the North Sea.

The Fifie, characterized by vertical stem and stern, wide beam, and straight keel, is notably stable in the water and can carry a large variety of fish.

Despite the long keel, which can make maneuvering in small harbors difficult, the Fifie is appreciated for its speed and agility. From 1905 onwards, many sailing Fifies were gradually equipped with engines, transforming them into non-exclusively sailing vessels.

Today, the Fifie continues to be an icon of Scottish maritime heritage. With two masts and a standard rig that includes a mainsail on the mainmast and a mizzenmast with a straight lugsail, the Fifie represents a mix of tradition and innovation in shipbuilding.

Spanning eras and changes, the Fifie maintains its essence as a symbol of Scottish maritime life.
